Critics Mock Hockey Team For Honoring Brett Favre
What does a professional hockey team have to do with Brett Favre? That's a question many in the sports world have been asking since a team from the American Hockey League announced their intentions to honor the recently retired quarterback.

ROCKFORD, IL, March 23, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Rockford, Illinois - What does a professional hockey team have to do with Brett Favre? That's a question many in the sports world have been asking since a team from the American Hockey League announced their intentions to honor the recently retired quarterback.

The Rockford IceHogs went public last week with their plans to host "Brett Favre Retirement Night" on Monday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m., during their matchup with the Milwaukee Admirals at the Rockford MetroCentre.

"We're always looking for fun and creative ways to market and promote the Rockford IceHogs," said IceHogs Vice President of Communications Mike Peck. "With a fairly strong Green Bay Packers following in the Rockford region, we thought doing this Brett Favre promotion would be something different and fun for the fans."

"Brett Favre Retirement Night" will feature a variety of promotions for fans, including discounted upper end zone seating priced at $4 per ticket in honor of the three-time NFL league MVP. Students with a valid student ID can purchase the best seat in the house for just $10 at the door. The most decked-out Brett Favre fan will win a pair of airline tickets to Orlando courtesy of Allegiant Air, and the first 2,000 fans through the door will receive a 10th Anniversary Player card set courtesy of U.S. Cellular.

Several fans will also go home with a pair of Wrangler jeans and a copy of the newly released "Letters To Brett Favre: A Fan Tribute" by Wisconsin author Thomas Hapka and bringbackbrettfavre.com founders Erick and Adam Rolfson.

Though some may not immediately make the connection between a hockey team and a retired football player, Hapka feels it is obvious.

"Hockey is a fast-paced, physical game known for bone-jarring collisions and intense battles that take place on a frozen playing surface — conditions all too familiar to Brett during his many years on the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field," Hapka told reporters in Whitewater on Saturday afternoon. "It makes perfect sense that a hockey team would choose to honor a man whose entire career exemplified toughness."

Hapka and the Rolfsons will be available to greet fans and sign copies of their book throughout the game, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Special Olympics. Additional copies of "Letters To Brett Favre: A Fan Tribute" will be autographed by the entire IceHogs team and auctioned off, with all of the proceeds going to Special Olympics chapters in Wisconsin and Illinois.
