"john & jen" is the work of lyricist Tom Greenwald and composer Andrew Lippa. Lippa's other work includes the popular off-Broadway version of The Wild Party and new songs for the Broadway revival of You're A Good Man Charlie Brown. Spanning 1952-1992, the piece tells the story of a woman named Jen and the two Johns of her life: her younger brother and her son (both played by the same actor). Through the years Jen and her brother grow from young confidantes into adults with very different views. These contradictory views result in a falling out when John joins the navy. After John is tragically killed in Vietnam, Jen gives birth to a son, who she also names John, and goes to touching and often humorous lengths to resurrect her late brother's memory.

"I have a special place in my heart for simplistic musicals," says the theatre's artistic
director, Meghan Randolph. "The space at the West Side Club is without a doubt the smallest I will ever have worked in, in any capacity," Randolph continues. "The playing space is minimal, but for this show it is ideal. The audience will be able to zero right in on the action." The most exciting thing about this piece, Randolph says, is its wide accessibility. "Because the characters go from young children to adults, through four different decades in history, there are elements of the story that everyone will understand. Audiences of varying ages will be able to relate to sibling rivalry, the trials of being a parent, conflicting political views, overbearing parents, and the loss of loved ones. There are so many elements that will appeal to so many people. "
